Her Mates by Suzanne Thomas, ok let me just say....... Whoa, please someone put out the fire! I don't know what to say but holy moley this book was HOT! And I don't mean just erotic hot, I mean seriously someone please poor some cold water on me hot!


Now for starters I saw this book review yesterday and I would love to give credit for making me aware of it, but for the life of me I can’t remember. What I do remember was that she loved it and said it was a hot, sizzling, scorcher of a read! Ok, that is really all I needed to hear, short story, can read in an hour, shifters (were bears), sold!

Well, yes it was insanely erotic I must say but out of the 60 some odd pages I would have to say (a guess) that the sex scenes were about 45 of those pages. LOL. Now I will say this once more, they were INCREDIBLE!!!! And strategically done. After all there were 5 men and one woman. Yes I said 5, I didn’t think it was possible but apparently it was and nicely done at that. But I thought it could have been a little more of an intriguing storyline. I got into the story right of way with Alice coming off the wagon train, the death of her father and the harassment for the single men a great concept. She needed a job to get away from the leader of the wagon train before he passed her off to the highest bidder per say. In comes Brand, one of 5 brother’s who is a were bear. Smelling his mate in town he searches for her until he convinces her that he has a job her at their ranch. A lie really, he just needs to get her back to the ranch and his brothers. Who are all just as sexy and beautiful as he is, she will be the mate to all of them. Now I was worried about the logistics of the situation. How the heck were they all going to fit on the bed?

Let the games begin, because Alice isn’t even herself anymore, the mating heat and her inner bear which has been suppressed until now takes over. And boy it is good!

If you are looking for a smoking read that I promise will knock your socks off then this is for you, the story isn’t bad, I just wish there was a bit more storyline to go with all the sex. Yikes, I can’t believe I just said that! ;-)

When the five Dupries brothers first look upon the lush beauty destined to be their mate, they are awed and filled with lust. Alice has to come to terms with not only her raging desire for the five were-bear brothers but also the knowledge that she has become a ferocious and dangerous animal herself.

The uncontrolled lust and cravings the Dupries brothers have ignited in her has Alice reeling to find a balance to make sense of what her life has come to mean. Will the love and devotion the five men besiege her with be enough to overcome the overwhelming knowledge that she is no longer who she thought she was?

What’s a girl to do all alone in the world where men with devious designs on her body plot against her? Why, go get a job of course.

Thing is, that’s kind of hard to do in the wagon train days. I give Alice a lot of credit for never giving up and trying her best to be true to her good heart and character. Although this is a fast paced story due to its length, I got a good feel for Alice’s woes and her determination to not take the easy way out. A reader feels bad for her because there’s a good sense that she’s about to hit the end of the road and it won’t be pretty.

Good thing she smells. Not that people notice anything unusual about her but the first of the story’s heroes steps into the scene with a strong sense of smell and he’s thrilled. I love the description of the hunt. Brand is the first and for some reason, I see him as the strongest and more alpha of the group even though he’s second born. The sensual tension builds as Alice and Brand ride to the cabin. There were switches of POV’s but they were well placed and explained quite well what was going on and why. The paranormal aspect of this book made it all work and in fact made it perfectly plausible.

I was a bit curious how all those brothers could make it all work out with one woman and I’m happy to say it was terrific. I had such fun reading this story that I was done reading it before I wanted to be.

Usually, the men do all the biting and clawing in paranormal romances and it was refreshing to find a woman who is so ferocious, the men dote on her. It’s a bear thing.

If a reader is looking for some sensual and fun paranormal sexcapades with really cute and brawny men, then Her Mates has everything one could wish for. I’m very glad I read this book.

Jae’s Review:
I was immediately drawn in to Alice’s plight and her desires to find sanctuary. I found the backdrop very interesting and vividly laid out for the reader.

The plot starts with an interesting premise, but it almost feels like it goes too fast with too little development along the way. I’m introduced to the remaining characters in short order but learn very little about them along the way. With such a large cast of characters, it was no doubt difficult to cover the story within such a short framework. However, I felt disappointed at times that we didn’t get to learn more about the brothers or Alice’s background.

As a heroine, she seemed so strong in the beginning, but I had trouble following some of the developmental changes that occurred to her throughout the story. There are a few plot holes that I would love to have had filled before the story ended, most of which could be handled by the interspersing of back story throughout the tale.

All in all, this wasn’t a bad story. It just wasn’t wrapped up tightly and cohesively—more like an interlude into the lives of these characters. The sex scenes were well crafted. And with six participants that’s no easy feat, I’m sure. I could easily see the scenes that were painted by the author…the landscapes, the houses, and the environment that she set up for her characters. All of it was easy to picture through Ms. Thomas’ writing.

With a bit more character development and plot definition this could have been an outstanding story. As it is, I enjoyed it for the quick romp into the lives of these 5 were-bears that it is. It was certainly sexy and passion-filled.

I would be happy to try another story by Suzanne Thomas in the future. I’m betting that if the story was longer, there’d be no stopping her talent made obvious in this story.

THE RIDE

Well, the book has been out for a couple of week now and it's still at #1. What a ride. I have been so happy with the feedback from friends and fans on how much they like the story. The same question though is asked over and over - will there be a sequel? Yes, the 5 brothers and Alice 's journey will continue.

My next book though is stepping away from shape-shifters and into the realm of ménage- cowboy/western. I want to be the type of writer who can multi genre, if that’s even an expression. With erotic romance, the limitations are non-excitant and I intend to embrace that.
